What’s a Critic to Do?

Reading both professional and amateur critics’ scathing reviews of the astoundingly terrible film Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice has been great fun; but sadly, many of them also demonstrate how we are all so accustomed to misogyny in superhero movies it can seem pointless to keep discussing it. All the think pieces on the […]Read Post ›

Why Are The Oscars Popular?

Oscar season is a time for people to appreciate film as an art form in all its different facets, from costume design to editing. This event has occurred for over half a century and therefore it has become normalized, so we do not question its existence. But why is it the most popular art-based award […]Read Post ›

Material World Monday: Fantastic Plastics

If you were asked to name building materials, I doubt many people would list ‘plastic’ as one of them. But at one point in time, engineers and designers thought it would completely revolutionize the way that we build.

Mad Max: Fury Road, Article 1: Political Dystopia

I could write an entire book breaking down this movie. There are so many aspects of it that are larger than life, yet somehow it all comes out as a subtle scream. See, it’s a loud and aggressive movie, but it’s tender and quiet in its own right. This ingenious juxtaposition reflects and defines the […]Read Post ›

The Evolution of Elsa: Not Your Average “Disney Princess”

It’s that time of year again, when ‘Let It Go‘ blasts from every loudspeaker across every mall across America. But there’s more to Frozen, and its queen, than meets the eye.

Reality TV vs. Re-Watching TV

We re-watch movies and binge-watching television shows that we have memorized. If we know the endings and we know all the jokes, why are we truly watching these things? One would say it is for the experience, but is not the experience lessened each time we re-watch something? In real life, if we go somewhere […]Read Post ›

Belle: Stripped Down

Disney has received a lot of criticism over the years. I recently heard an opinion that piqued my interest and made me want to delve into the deep dark world of Disney’s character development. This opinion in particular had to do with whether or not Belle from Beauty And The Beast is a good person, but […]Read Post ›

Wild: A Push For Feminism In Film

It’s not a secret that Hollywood creates very few movies with female protagonists outside of the romance genre. This is based off of the archaic yet pervasive idea that self-reliant woman leads do not sell tickets. Reese Witherspoon and her business partner Bruna Papandrea aim to disrupt this widespread sexist notion through the creation of […]Read Post ›

Kiki Revisited

I first saw the film Kiki’s Delivery Service as a four-year-old at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The 1989 animated film by the Japanese company Studio Ghibli had won many accolades domestically, been dubbed into English by Disney and launched onto the international film scene. Kiki’s Delivery Service tells the story of a […]Read Post ›

Cheers from London: Brief Reflections on London Museums and the 19th Century

I recently returned from a visit to London for a family vacation, and naturally several of the great London museums were on our itinerary. As someone who has interned with various museums in the US, and visited others as an art history student, I was interested in London’s art scene.
